I'm going to talk about «myths and heroes». First, I will give you a definition of hero. He can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. A myth is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning hero or event. My presentation will fall into three parts : First of all, I'll concentrate on Winston Churchill, then I'll present Edward Snowden before finally focusing on a analyze about the following question : What is the frontier between a hero and a villain ?
A hero can be a patriotic or a national hero such as a sportsman, a politican, a human rights defender. Churchill is a historic hero. Before, he was a lord of the Admiralty however, during the second World War, Churchill showed a talent on lead army to victory. Today Churchill is usually considerate as an hero, everybody know his name. The Myth about Churchill is build around his nickname like « The man with a cigare » or « the man with the v for victory » and the « old lion ».The strengh of Churchill is mainly his personnality, indeed Churchill is admirated for his painter and writer talent’s . He receveid in 1953 the litterature Nobel Prize. The myths has also hide things, for example his alcoholism or in a document of 1937, he said anti-semitic things. Furthermore, during the second world war he commited controversial acts . He would so have covered Stalin in charge of the massacre of Katyn (the murderer of thousand polish il 1940) to protect their alliance. Moreover he was against unions and deployed army to shut down strikes lead by workers.
More recently you certainly heard about Edward Snowden. While working for the National Security Agency, Snowden began copying top-secret NSA documents, building a dossier on practices that he found invasive and disturbing. On May 20, 2013, Snowden took a flight to Hong Kong, China, where he remained as he orchestrated a clandestine meeting with journalists from the U.K. publication The Guardian. On June 5, the daily newspaper released secret documents obtained from Snowden. The following day, The Guardian and The Washington Post released Snowden's leaked information about an NSA program that allows real-time information collection electronically. A flood of information followed, and both domestic and international debate ensued. Before the American elections some in a debate between Democrates candidate, some of them blame his action. Nevertheless is he a hero or villain ?
For me Edward Snowden is a kind of hero because he show courage in reveal secret information about government program. Indeed he must be ready to do anyhing to reach his ideal. But as we can see he is not very crystal clear with his purpose because he flew to Hong Kong to escape the USA. In my opinion if he was sure that what he did was right he didn't have to flew out the US. In fact a lot of people would have support him. I'm quite of the same opinion about Churchill, he accomplished so much feats but in a same time he also covered terrible acts and he even kill people to shut down some strikes. I mean, when he deployed army on it.
So, what could be the border between a hero and a villain ? I think that is there a matter of point of view. Actually, a hero has to be a role model so you have to recognize a part of you in him or recognize something you admire but all the people doesn't have the same goal and the same ideal so how a hero could be a hero for everybody ? From my point of view the frontier between a hero and a villain is only a question of what you admire the most.
Merci d'avance ! :)
