The police in São Paulo, Brazil, have recovered a stolen Picasso print and arrested a man in connection with its theft from the Pinacoteca do Estado museum last month, The Associated Press reported. “The Painter and the Model,” right, from 1963, was one of four works stolen on June 12 by three armed men who paid the entrance fee of $2.45 and then overpowered guards. Another Picasso print, “Minotaur, Drinker and Women,” from 1933, and two paintings by Brazilian artists are still missing; the combined value of the four works has been estimated at $612,000. Wesley Teobaldo Barros, 30, was arrested on Friday night along with two other men not involved in the museum heist. They had been under surveillance in a separate investigation, the police said, because they were planning to steal an automated teller machine. To the surprise of the police, the men mentioned the Picasso in a tapped phone conversation. The print was found in “perfect condition,” the director of the museum, Marcelo Araújo, told reporters. The robbery at Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo’s oldest fine arts museum, was the second recent Picasso theft in the city. In December, his “Portrait of Suzanne Bloch” was stolen from the São Paulo Museum of Art. The police recovered it and arrested two suspects a few weeks later.
