Yes, the United States can be classified as a nation of immigrants. In 1492, explorer Christopher Columbus discovered America but returned to Europe to live the rest of his life. It is not until 1607 that the first immigrants to America arrived from England with the specific intent to settle in America. Jamestown in Virginia, was the first colony formed by immigrants. Over the years, immigrants came to America from many nations around the world in pursuit of better life opportunities.

Although Columbus is said to have discovered America, he landed in what is now known as the Bahamas islands. The first person to have landed on what is present day “ United States” is Juan Ponce De Leon of Spain who arrived in Florida in 1513. Immigration in America occurred in different waves: from the 17th to 18th century, most immigrants were citizens of colonial  powers such as England, Spain, France and Holland but it is true also that a large number of Africans immigrated at that time as part as the slave trade conducted by these colonial powers. Second wave of immigrants came during the industrial revolution age and included Germans, Irish, Italians, Scandinavians, Chinese. The third wave of immigrants occurred in the 20th century following large scale wars in Europe and South East Asia. Today, many immigrants come from all four corners of the world with the same purpose: the pursuit of a better life and opportunities. Over the years, American immigration policies have been put in place to limit the number of immigrants coming into the country. America is today, the 3rd largest country in the world with a population of more than 370 million people. 95% of the US population can trace their origins or ancestry to a country outside of the United States. The remaining 5% are made of Native Americans whose ancestors were occupants of the American land before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
