====================================== Myths and Heroes - A Synthesis
A myth is a traditional story concerning the early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.
A hero is a person of superhuman qualities and abilities who is admired for his courage and/or outstanding achievements.
Generally, a hero is depicted (portrayed) through poems, song, paintings, fairy tales, stories, sculptures and articles in newspapers. So, let’s ask ourselves how the various ways and means of representing heroes allow to give to the readers a good portrayal of a hero.
First of all, let’s see a representation of a hero in a poem, then in a an articles of newspaper.
First of all, poems are used for representing a hero. Indeed, the poems allow us to narrate an outstanding or remarkable event. For example, in « the hero » of Siegfried Sassoon, written in 1917, the poet (narrates) tells the death of a soldier during the war. His name was Jack. Just only his mother was proud of her son. Other soldiers, or other parents, did not worry about this soldier. Jack’s mother was proud of him because she believed her son had died for a good reason. For her, Jacks sacrificed his life for his country. This poem shows that only the mothers of dead soldiers are proud of their sons, and see them as heroes. Thus, each person sees the other people according to situations. The heroes for certain people are not necessarily the heroes for the others.
Next, the articles of newspaper also represented the heroes. We see an article in a newspaper « Breaking down barriers » of Adam Piorre. It is an extract from « NewsWeek » of 8th January, 2001. He speaks of the situation in Texas when Dat's family arrived there. It was very difficult, because Texicans (texasians) didn't want Vietnamese people to come to Texas. Americans were scared of losing their jobs, they might have thought that Vietnamese people were stealing their work.
Dat influenced his community, and he succeeded in uniting the Americans and the Vietnamese people. He managed to reconcile the two communities. If Dat had not been a professional football player, it would have been difficult to achieve peace. Thus, in this article, Dat is portrayed as a hero.
In conclusion, a hero is portrayed differently depending on the way we choose to present him/her. That is, the hero portrayed in a newspaper article, such as <<Breaking down barriers>> can be for (the purpose of) publicity (propaganda, popularising). It tries to give a version of the history and a way of depicting a hero. The newspaper is read by a lot of people, it will thus be easier to influence (impress) the population to see (or view, feel) a person as a hero. Thus a poem, for example, « the hero » of Siegfried Sassoon, does not try to do any propaganda . But it tries to simply depict what it happened, and show why the poet sees this person as a hero.
Thus various ways of representing a hero (a newspaper, a painting, a sculpture, a poem, a story, a fairy tale, a song) do not depict or portray a hero in the same way, and do not have the same purpose.
