Background : My name is Robin and I was fourteen when I left France. My family and I had to leave our country on the 10th of March 2020 because my father had just found a new job in the USA. That day, we took a boat to reach the USA with my mother, my father, and my brother.
Reasons for leaving : As I mentioned before we left France because my father’s new job as a scientist. I knew that he did scientific researches on diseases (les maladies.) but that was all I was aware of. I was scared of going to a new school with children who would speak another tongue. But I was also exited because the USA was a dream for me as it certainly was for a lot of children of my age
Crossing : The crossing went smooth and my parents allowed my brother and I to stay on the deck (le pont du bateau) to watch the ocean. It was really beautiful during day and terrifying at night because my brother told me creepy stories about see monsters(des histoires qui font peur) while we were looking at the darkness that surrounded the ocean. Yet/however (cependant) I was a bit upse (bouleversé)t to leave my country and my friends and it made me sad. I had the impression of always moving because my father often changed jobs.
Ellis Island : we arrived three days later at Ellis Island. I really enjoyed observing the island before setting foot on it. I imagined it bigger. There (la-bàs), we were asked plenty of questions by the official who wanted to know where we came from, why we wanted to enter the USA. My father answered all their questions. Then, they called a doctor who examined us and after that, they eventually let us take another boat to New York.
Outcome : on the last boat, I was thinking about my new life when I noticed among (parmi) the passengers a gir.l It seemed to me that I knew her. Could it be her? I wasn’t sure, so I walked in her direction and I noticed that she smiles at me. I was so happy that i almost shed tears (verser des larmes) of joy. It was sarah, a girl I went to school with a few years ago. At least I would have a friend in this new country.
