The sun was warm on the river bank, and the deep grass looked soft and
inviting. He lay down, and a moment later, he was fast asleep. When he woke and
opened his eyes, he was looking out over the river. Then, suddenly conscious of
someone else near, he turned his head. The Aborigine man was standing a few
feet away, gazing inscrutably.
Jeremy quickly sat up and eyed the man warily, ready to spring to his feet and run. “Are you hungry?” the
man demanded brusquely. Jeremy hesitated, then nodded eagerly. “Yes, sir.” Jeremy climbed to his feet and
followed the man through the forest. At the camp, a chicken was roasting on a spit over the fire, he seated
himself as the man sat down beside the fire. “My name’s Jarboe Charlie,” he said “What’s yours? “Jeremy,” the
boy replied.
