Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on Friday, almost four years after officially retiring from public office in August 2017. He was 99 years old.

He had been married to Queen Elizabeth II for over 70 years, since the two were married at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. To foreigners it seemed like they had the perfect romance, between their marriage of fairy tale - the first British royal wedding to be broadcast live - and their shared love for Rodgers and Hammerstein Oklahoma's musical! (especially the song "People Will Say We're In Love").

On their 50th birthday in 1997, the Queen noted in a speech that he had been an oft-hidden force to keep her stable at the helm for half a century:

Yesterday I listened to Prince Philip speak in the Guildhall and then offered our host's health. Today, the roles are reversed.

Too often, I fear, Prince Philip must have listened to me speak. Often times we have discussed my planned speech beforehand and, as you can imagine, his views were expressed bluntly.

He is someone who does not take compliments easily, but he has, quite simply, been my strength and stayed all these years, and me, and all his family, and that and many other countries, owe him a greater debt than he would. never claim, or we'll never know.
