I am going to talk about the idea of progress. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. It can be a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. However, the idea of progress is still debate between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful.
Now, I propose we look at a question: Does progress always have advantages?
To answer this question, I will talk about progress and its advantages. Then I will talk about disadvantages.
First of all, I think progress is essential to evolve. History is made of progress and evolution that have allowed the world to be what it’s today.
Society is still moving so is language. With the development of new technologies like phones, computers, tablets for example, people are change their means of communication.
As we have seen, more and more people use emojis when they write a message. Indeed, according to the text “Emoji is the new language of the future and there’s no going back” which was written by Talia Storm, a girl who is 16 years old emoji are the future. For her emojis are powerful than words and they have many different meanings, too. She thing that they allow us to express our feelings more easily. But they also make a conversation more fun.
Furthermore, that’s also what a poll by Viv Evans, a university language Professor reveals. Firstly, eighty per cent of English people use emojis. Then, seventy-two per cent of eighteen to twenty-five age group think it’s easier to express their feelings.
So, thanks to emojis, society can change and evolves, they create a new language which make a better life.
Emojis are an example of evolution on our society but they have no bad influence on the planet. Indeed, many other examples show that some technological developments have a serious impact on the environment. That’s what we saw on Progress, a painting by Asher B. Durand, a member of the “Hudson River school”. After several hypotheses, we have concluded that the painting shows a sunset on a industrial city which is polluting the atmosphere. More and more of this industrial city are developing in the modern world so they cause the deforestation problem.
On the other hand, we saw an article from RTE news, an Irish TV channel. We learned that more and more demonstration was taking place in order to try to warn shoppers to avoid plastic bags.
Furthermore, some volunteers decided to put bins near the cash desk so that shoppers can throw away useless packaging. So, plastic can be recycling but today, 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally each year however only 10% is recycled.
In the second part of the video, Seamus Clancy, a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of a recycling plant explains the aim of is company and advantages of what he does. Indeed, he said that since 1997, Repak, is company, has recycled 1 million tons of plastic.
Plastic is one of the causes of global warming but it’s also the cause of the disappearance of some animal species like turtles.
To conclude, we can say that progress have so many good advantages especially in technical. They make it possible to improve the living conditions of the populations but this to the detriment of the planet. So, progress or good for human evolution but bad for the environment.
Personally, I think that we can try to conciliate progress and the safety of the environment.
