WEAVING IN AFRICA

in many countries of africa weaving is a man's job. women harvest comb and spin the cotton but don't run the loom. however in some countries such as nigeria women weave using a vertical loom. their loom is a rectangular frame which they keep upright.the finished piece of cloth is twice the height of the loom and is no wider than the crossbeams. often they make geometric designs and mix silk yarn with the cotton yarn to create motifs. the men on the other hand use a horizontal loom. it produces strips of cloth which the women then sew together to make a narrow band of cloth. usually the men work outside under the shade of a tree or in the familly compound. in northern a whole village is a weavers village. in the drawing below you can see the long warp threads stretched out in front of the loom. the other threads called the welf are the threads which the weaver weaves between the warp threads s'il vout plait pour tout de suite
