There are very few women in Pakistan's financial sector and Maheen Rahman has made it all the way to the top. She is one of the most successful asset managers here, she is also the country's youngest CEO. "I was 31 and I was working with a board that was at least 20 to 25 years my senior. It was a combination of being a female and being very young. But I think I got a lot of support from, you know, you need 4 or 5 clients to really begin to show you that support and they will to do it if you are ethical and honest and if you are developing that relationship with them with the absolute best intentions. So, I think they did see that." Within a year of becoming a CEO, Maheen did not only turn around losses, she was able to double her company's assets. Still, she says her biggest challenge has been building a reputation of trust in an industry that values grey hair and being male as she put it. Despite her success, she often gets asked why she works in finance, not fashion. "I think it's gotten to the point where people don't even realize that they are saying something off. So, you know, the design clothes was one aspect but there are so many men who will stand with a very straight face in front of me and say : Oh well, you know, we don't think that a working mom can be a good mom." Being a woman CEO means that home and work life often overlap. Maheen is (je n'ai pas compris le mot au milieu...) on boss and mother. "So, on any given day you're checking the markets on the phone and you're doing math homework? -Yes, anywhere from sixth grade to second grade. And not just that, I mean, they have so many school projects and you know all these things... So I'll be making a little shoe box of something and talking with the fund manager on whatsapp, so it's like a multitask type of situation." Juggling her children's needs plus (+) millions of dollars and asset funds is something Maheen says she is used to by now. As for the future, she hopes the Pakistani financial sector will expand and that more women will make it to the boardrooms. Shaimaa Khalil, BBC News, Karachi.
