The Notting Hill Carnival in London is the largest (1) celebration of its kindin Europe. It hits the record books by being the biggest (2) street festival, withover a million carnival revellers and 20 miles worth of colourful(3) curries .The tradition started in 1964 as a local festival set up by the West Indian(4) Caribbean. Carnival has lengthy roots in Trinidad where it was firstorganised to mark the abolition of the slave trade there. The Notting Hill Carnival has now grown to be a general (5) dancing celebration attended by people from many different corners of the world.It takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend with a steel band(6) competition on Saturday, kids’ day and costume prizes on Sunday andon Monday the legendary parade.The music reflects the Caribbean theme with (7) steel bands, soca, calypso,and more recently reggae, funk, house and dub. The food, too, has a WestIndian flavour. Visitors can try jerk chicken, rice and peas,(8) eating, fried plantain and of course some punch to wash it down.
