Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in South Africa. After many years of fighting apartheid, arrests and trials, Nelson Mandela and seven of his companions were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for sabotage, treason and conspiracy. During his captivity, he refused to be released from the public denial of the anti-apartheid struggle. Nelson Mandela was finally freed on 11 February 1990 after 27 and a half years in prison.
In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In the same year Nelson Mandela was elected President of South Africa until 1999. Nelson Mandela founded the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 1999 and dedicated himself to the fight against AIDS after his son's death in 2005.
