1. Ayers Rock
Uiter (in the Anangu Aboriginal language) was pamed
dyer Rock by European csploreis (after Sir Henry
Ayers, a 19th century governor of South Australia).

dating back thousands of ycars represent stories of the
Drermtime (or Creation Time). They depic humza

According to an Aboriginal legend, Serpent Spirits
waged many was around Uluru, chus lexving scaus
in the rock. Another Iegend tells of " wo tibes of
ancestral spirits who were invited to a feast, but were
distracted by the beautiful Sleepy Lizard Women and
did not show up. In response, the angry hosts sang cvil
into a mud sculpture that came to life as the dingo.
There followed great battle, which ended in he
deaths _of the Icaders of both wibes. The earth itself
rose up in grief at the bloodshed, becoming Uluru."

The dlimb to the top of Uluru crosses an importent
dreaming track, so the local indigenous commanity
would rather tourists respected the sacredness of the
site and just tok the walking tour around its basc.
However many visitors make the 1.6 km ascent to the
top to admnire-the breathtakin g vicws. Some cven steal
picces of the rock to take them home (chough this is
supposed to bring bad luck).

2 Sydngy
In 1788, Sir Arthur Phillip established the first British
coloay in Australia at Sydney Cove (named after the
Bricsh Home Sectctary, Lord Sydngy). Sydney has
attracted immigrants from around, the world (mostly
the Bridish Isles, Burope and later Asia) since the
1850s gold rush. Today, this highly multicultural ciy
is home to over 4 million people.
The photograph shows Sydney Harbour, with the
business district on the right-hand side, and the famous
Sydncy Opera House, on the lcft- the Harbour Bridgc
(1932) is to the right, beyond the framc.
The daringly nodern Sydncy Opera Housc was
designed by Danish architect Jomn Utzon. A scries
of prccast concrete helmet-like or shell-like roofs of
varying sizes are covered with 1.056 million glossy
white and matte cream Swedish-made tiles, producing
a spectacular shimmering cffect in the sunlight. The
building which CovCrs 1.8 bectares, rests on 588
concrete piers, sunk 25. metres below sca lovel.
Qucen Flizabeth II opened the building in 1973. The
event, attended by chousands of people, was televised.​
