Yasmine Arrington knows firsthand the challenges of having an incarcerated parent.
“My father was in and out of prison his whole life,” she said. “I started doing research and learned that there are so many other people my age who are achieving what I'm going through.”
At age 16, she started the nonprofit ScholarCHIPS — with CHIPS as an acronym for Children of Incarcerated Parents — to help young people like her with scholarships, mentorship and a support network.
The organization has since awarded more than $450,000 in scholarships and other aid and supported more than 80 scholars working toward their college degrees. New researchers join the program every year.
