fon Fred is a fisherman. He lives at Trou aux Biches and his own boat. He was born in Rodrigues but came to live at Trou aux Biches a long time ago when he was still a young man. Now he is old. His only son, Jacques, is not interested in fishing. Jacques works as a mechanic on a sugar estate.

Ton Fred gets ready to fish in the afternoon. He collects his bait and prepares the lines Then, he goes to sit for a while in the open shop veranda with friends and they drink quite a few bottles together. His wife often complains and says he drinks too much. His hard work and drinking make him look very old and tired.

Very early in the morning, before sunrise, he is up and goes well out beyond the ols in his pirogue. He depends only on his sails to go out of the lagoon and come back in. He never goes out when the weather is bad. Some summer afternoons, we go and see him and ask him to take us out for a fishing trip. He always looks at the wels before giving us an answer. If the reefs have a rough crest, that is the sea is a be rough, he will not venture out even if you offer him double pay. We are not ways lucky when we go out with him. On one occasion, however, after an unsuccessful two hours beyond the reefs, we dropped our lines just inside the reefs on our way back. Imagine our surprise when we started hauling up one fish after another. On that day, we caught so many fish that they filled the kitchen sink. Only approaching darkness made us stop fishing and sail ashore.​
