”The Man” is a song written and produced by Taylor Swift. The artist’s idea was to express her frustration within the music industry and the world, generally, as in the lack of respect and appreciation for women and their work. Swift has self-written all her songs since a young age, and after her debut in 2008 she has only become bigger with her work, and although she has an amazing skill, people still judge her for her past relationships, and even argue she is only famous because of her connections to men. “The Man” is a song that Swift longed to write, it talks about how, if she was a man, people wouldn’t care about the people she date or if she was badly dressed or even if she treated people badly. It expresses the anguish of being a woman in a industry that praises men, on how it doesn’t matter how great her music is, or the impact it has, because all people can see is her writing songs about her ex-boyfriends, they are worried about labeling her. On the line “I would be THE man” Taylor explains that if she was a man, and did the exact same things she does now, she would be praised, admired and hyped up, but because she is a woman, this doesn’t happen. Women have a history on having to be 10 times better than men to be considered the same level, because society view them differently, more fragile, less intelligent, less significant. It is rooted within us, we are thought to tell little girls to play with dolls and pretend to be princesses and boys to fight with toy swords, to play soccer and climb trees, when in fact, we all have the same potential and should have the same rights.
