In the 18th century, there were 13 British colonies in America.
In 1765 the colonies began to protest because they didn't want to pay high taxes. They wanted to become independent, that's why they started the American Revolution.

The Boston Tea Party is the most famous act of protest. On 16 December 1773, the colonists threw 342 valuable boxes of tea into the sea because the British Parliament put a new tax on tea that the American colonists didn't want to pay. They were very angry.

The British Parliament reacted with severe laws.
In April 1775 the American War of Independence began with battles between British soldiers and American colonists at Lexington and Concord.

Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin with 53 other men, wrote The Declaration of Independence. This document declared liberty and equality for all men and the separation of the thirteen colonies from Great Britain along with the creation of the United States of America. On the 4 July 1776, the leaders of the revolution approved this document.

On 8 July 1776 they read the Declaration of Independence for the first time. It was in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. They also rang the "Liberty Bell"; it became a symbol and a tradition to ring it every 4 July until it broke in 1835.
The war continued after the Declaration of Independence. In 1778 the French arrived. in 1781 the French and American soldiers won an important battle in Yorktown in Virginia.

In 1783, the Americans and Great Britain signed a peace treaty in Paris. The United States of America became an independent nation.
