The Big Ben is one of the english monuments you can't miss due to its location. It is located in front of the Tamise. It is located in the clock tower Westminster palace also called the "British Parliament". It is one of the parliement's symbol.
A light is shining inside of this monument when the Parliament is taking place by night. Every 31st december, the british people reunite around the Big Ben to spend the new year's eve.
In 1835 a fire has burned down one of the part of the Parliament. After this fire, a commission planned the future of the building. Charles Berry was the initiator of the the bell towwer of the Parliament. The work started in 1856 to end in 1858.
Firstly, the monument was called "The Great Bell". There are two theories about its actual name :
- This name could have been given to the monument to a tribute of Benjamin Hall who was the politician and civil engineer and who was a bit plump (Big) and because of is nickname "Ben".
- The second theory is based on the name of the boxer Ben Caunt who won his last fight during the period when the name of the monument was discused.
To build this bell tower, the workers had to transport the first bell on a cart pulled by 16 horses. This bell was built in 1856. And then, a second bell was built and was the 10th of April 1858 in the Foundry of Whitechapel. In October 1858, the bell was moved by 61 meters in 18 hours to the belfry. On the May the 31st 1859, the famous bell tower is finally achieved.
Every years, the clock is adjusted by placing a penny on the mecanism if the clock is a bit advanced or by removing a penny if the clock is delayed.
When english people talk about the "Big Ben", it refers to the tower. On every 31st of December (since 1859), the clock resonates which means that for every one that the new year is starting. The sound is broadcasted on every TV channel and on every radio worldwide.
