1) a) In the 1830s, the first photograph was taken by Frenchman and an Englishman in Britain. In the 1860s, the world's first underground subway system (the Tube) was built. In the 1890s, X-Rays were discovered. b) Being born in a poor family often meant that children had to start working at a very young age in order to survive, whereas wealthy kids had no responsibilities; they could enjoy expensive toys and go on holiday. Of course, taking a vacation was out of question for poor children, and many of them died before reaching adult age due to disease. c) Children could work in factories and in coal mines, or as street sellers and chimney sweeps. In my opinion, they worked in inhumane conditions. d) Rich children: they had expensive toys such as china or wax dolls, and rocking horses. Poor children: they had homemade toys like rag dolls. 2)a) Workhouses were buildings where the poor and the old could work in exchange for basic needs (food, clothes, etc.)
