What are vitamins?
Vitamins are substances necessary for the development and health of the body.
They are found in almost all foods and any deficiency brings about various
problems. A shortage of Vitamin A, for example, causes problems with the eyes
and in the growth of bones and teeth. A shortage of Vitamin B, loss of weight,
dryness of the skin and mouth sores and a scarcity of Vitamin D hinders the
formation of bones. So the way to avoid problems is to keep to a balanced diet,
which includes lots of fruit and fresh green vegetables - cooking and using
preservatives and additives makes many vitamins disappear. Going out in the open
air as much as possible in fine weather is also very good, because sunshine “fixes”
calcium in bones. The times when we run the greatest risk of illness - in winter, for
example, it is wise to eat more of the things containing Vitamin C - citrus fruits,
cabbages, potatoes to help the body defend itself.
