The Stolen Generations are Aboriginal children were taken from their families to live in Christian missionaries or in White families. This was done to civilize Aborigines. But for the Aborigines, this practice was first psychologically traumatic because of the forced separation, and then culturally destructive because of the breaking of the cultural cohesoin. It has resulted in poor health, psychological disorders, depression, etc.
Nowaday, the question is since it's initially based on a good intention and it was legally authorized, should the government ask for forgiveness ? If they recognize the idea of Stolen Generation, should they also think about financial compensation ?
On the ethical background, there's the problem of denial of human rights for the Aboriginal peoples to discuss.
All these make some Australians prefer to deny the idea of Stolen Generation.
