Besoin d'aide pour mon oral d'anglais. Sujet : "Myths and Heroes". Pouvez-vous me corriger et m'aider pour la fin ?
In order to start my presentation about Myths and Heroes, I would like to introduce these two notions. The word myth derives from the ancient Greek word mythos which means legend, but nowadays we use this word much more loosely, referring to a traditional story concerning the history of a people, a natural or social phenomenon. Hero also has Greek origins and means “demi-god”, a person with superhuman abilities accomplishing extraordinary achievements. The definition has evolved and now refers to a person who is admired for his courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities.
Every society has myths and heroes because these concepts are firmly anchored in cultures, religion, arts, litterature…However, they change depending on the societies. Myths or heroes in China are not the same as in Europe. I will make my presentation about myths and heroes in the UK and in the US.
In the Middle Age, the legends of Arthur explained how the legendary british king protected the England against the Saxons army wanting to invade it. This leader is really famous in the Anglo-Saxon culture since he’s perceived as a great leader defending the island from human and supernatural enemies. Beside, he put in place a great empire including Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Norway and Gaul. All the stories about King Arthur were really important in the early British culture and folklore.
The USA have also a kind of myths: the Pilgrim Father who settled the Plymouth Colony. They escaped the UK because of religious issues – they felt independent from the Church of England – and decided to put in place a colony in the current Massachusetts during the XVIth century. Some centuries later, while the USA became a land of immigration, the country needed to extend its territory and decided to conquest western lands. It was the American Frontier, this period is so important in the American culture that it became a kind of myth used in many movies.
If the American Frontier became a myth, the heroes of that period were the cowboys and the soldiers of American army fighting the Indians to conquest the West. These heroes have been showed for a long time as national heroes who allowed the USA to become so vast and so powerful. Until recently, noone told this period also was the slaughter of many Indians who only fought for their freedom and their dignity. Today, the Indian are more and more perceived as heroes.

In the Middle Age, the Arthurian legends explained how the legendary British king protected the England against the Saxons army willing (or eager) to invade it.
The USA also has (USA est toujours singulier) a kind of myths: the Pilgrim Father who settled the Plymouth Colony. They escaped the UK because of religious issues – they felt independent from the Church of England – and decided to establish a colony in the current Massachusetts during the XVIth century. Some centuries later, while the USA became a land of immigration, the country needed to extend its territory and decided to conquest western lands. The heroes were the cowboys protecting white family recently settled from the Native - the villains. John Wayne, Clint Eastwood or Jame Stewart were famous actors who acted as cowboys. They are considered as national heroes in people's mind cause they personify Justice, freedom, salvation... In the XXth century, a new kind of avengers appeared: the super heroes such as Superman, Batman, Captain America, ... The publishing houses which created all of these characters (chiefly Marvel and DC Comics) invented a mythology related to the numerous super heroes' and super villains adventures.
If the American Frontier became a myth, the heroes of that period were the cowboys and the soldiers of American army fighting the Native Americans (Indian = inhabitants of India) to conquest the West. These heroes have been showed for a long time as national heroes who allowed the USA to become so vast and so powerful. Until soon, no one told this period also was the slaughter of many Native American who only fought for their freedom and their dignity. Nowadays, the Native are more and more perceived as heroes. In the same way, some heroes are people likely to face the system. The two riders in the movie Easy Riders (Dennis Hopper, 1969) Bonnie and Clyde or Thelma and Louise are two examples of 'modern cowboys' trying to reach their feedom. Lonely, poor but free they try to escape the rules of the American conformist society.
