As I (open) ...⁶ the door, I (hear) ...⁷ the crash of a metallic object. I (turn) ...⁸ round and (see) ...⁹ a UFO, no doubt. And as I (stand) ...¹⁰ there, petrified and (wait) ...¹¹ for a Martian to come out, my neighbour (run) ...¹² into the garden, shouting "My drone! Dear me! It (crash) ...¹³!"

As I was opening⁶ the door, I heard⁷ the crash of a metallic object. I turned⁸ round and saw⁹ a UFO, no doubt. And as I was standing¹⁰ there, petrified and waiting¹ for a Martian to come out, my neighbour ran¹² into the garden, shouting "My drone! Dear me! It has .crashed¹³!"
le prétérit be + V-ing = action passée qui était en cours
prétérit simple = action passée, soudaine, courte
present perfect = action qui vient de se passer mais en lien avec le présent
