Artistic activism for the environment is not a new idea. Already at the end of the 20th century, a so-called "ecological" contemporary art movement emerged. It attests to a desire to succeed where classic scientific popularization fails: to raise public awareness of environmental issues. Ecological art was thus born in the United States with the precursor movement of Earth Art (or Land Art), which appeared in the 1960s. Artists then took on the role of mediators, spokespersons for the ecological cause. Their ultimate goal is to raise awareness in order to produce lasting societal change.
