Phyllis Dorothy James was born on the 3rd of August 1920 in Oxford, England. She had one younger brother and one younger sister. She left school when she was 16 years old; her family had no money. She was 21 years old when she got married to Ernest Bantry White, an early medical student, in 1941.
They had two daughters: Clare who was born in 1942 and Jane who was born in 1944.
