Martin Luther King Jr. more commonly known as Martin Luther King, born in Atlanta, Georgia, on 15 January 1929 and assassinated on 4 April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, was an African-American pastor, Baptist and non-violent activist for the American civil rights movement, fervent campaigner for peace and against poverty.
He organised and led actions such as the Montgomery bus boycott to defend voting rights, desegregation and employment for ethnic minorities.
Martin Luther King is the son of Baptist minister Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King, a church organist. He has an older sister, Christine King Farris, and a younger brother, Albert Daniel Williams King. He was born at 501 Aubrun Avenue in Atlanta, in a house that has been preserved and turned into a national museum, a few steps from Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his father preached. He grew up in segregated America, in a privileged environment for the time. His first experience of racial segregation was at the age of six, when two white playmates told him they were no longer allowed to play with him. His mother explained that this was because they were now in white segregated schools.
