Gênero é uma especificação que determina se a palavra pertence ao gênero masculino ou feminino. Para sabermos a que gênero a palavra pertence, temos de prestar atenção ao artigo que antecede. Portanto, nome de lugar(substantivos) possue gênero. Ex. : A cidade de São Paulo. O morro do Alemão. A praia do forte.

A cidade de São Paulo. O artigo pertence á cidade. Sampa repele artigo. A cidade do Rio de Janeiro. O Rio aceita artigo, mas como se pode perceber, aceita o artigo masculino.
