Abdelaziz Bouteflika, born on 2 March 1937 in Oujda, is an Algerian statesman. He has been President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria since 27 April 1999.
At the age of 19, he joined the National Liberation Army (NLA) during the Algerian war and became involved with Houari Boumediene, under whose aegis he made rapid progress in the administrative apparatus of the "border army".
Elected MP for Tlemcen in 1962, he was Minister of Youth, Sports and Tourism in the first Ahmed Ben Bella government from 1962 to 1963. He then served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1963 to 1979 in the three Ahmed Ben Bella and four Houari Boumédiène governments, and in 1974 was President of the United Nations General Assembly. 1979 to 1980, he was Minister Counsellor to the President of the Republic in the Abdelghani government.
