First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion : A myth can be defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his her achivements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. This year in class we studied several documents about Myths and Heroes and in particular videos. In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about subversive heroes and attempt to answer the question « To what extent is the character a subversive hero? ». To answer this question I will present 3 documents : The first scene of Scarface, Tony Montana Choice, and Scarface the scene at the restaurant. The first document I have chosen is the first scene of Scarface. In this scene Tony Montana is working with his friend Manny in a foodtruck opposite the « Little Havana », famous restaurant in Miami. The Little Havana's poster which displays the American Dream (beach, palm tress, building...) and Tony is furious because he has come here to achieve this dream no matter the business. This extract from the film shows the American Dream by revealing that Tony Montana came to America to realize his dream and that he is ready for anything. The second document I have chosen is the extract of Scarface at the restaurant. Tony Montana is having dinner in a luxurious restaurant, the Little Havana, with his wife and his friend Manny. Husband and wife are arguing over their lives. Tony is bitter, he is very rude and offensive, he is reproaching his wife to be a junkie and not to be able to bear his child. She is replying him that he wouldn't be a good father anyway because she is a gangster and his way of life and values are unsuitable with parenthood. He sounds truly disappointed by the American Dream which has not given him what he had expected : wealth and happiness. It is an interesting extract film of the notion of Myths and Heroes as it shows that Tony Montana is not totally a hero because even if he has succeeded his life, he has committed acts that are not expected of a hero such as murder or the sale of drugs. The third document is « Tony Montana Choice ». This extract film perfectly illustrates the idea of myths and heroes because Tony Montana refuses to activate the bomb because he does not want to kill the woman and the children, and he kills his teammate before he presses the button that activates the bomb. This means that Tony Montana has a little compassion and is not totally bad, and that there is someone more mean than him. To conclude, I think the concept of myths and heroes has an important place in the society. We must not forget that the definition hero is subjective, it depends on us and society. Define someone as hero is acceding to its causes, goals, which can sometimes be good and just as bad or faked. Some people or characters are considered heroes in reality impostors or corrupted. Narrated and presented to the children, myths and heroes are part of their education. These are examples of models to be chosen carefully. However, a fictional hero as real must be courageous, honest, just, that is to say have qualities. Merci pour votre aide !
