Bonjour je passe mes oraux d'anglais pour le bac dans une semaine et je voudrais savoir si mon texte ne presente pas de fautes. Voila merci d'avance! I’m going to talk about the notion« Idea of progress ». To begin with, I’d like to give a definition of progress. Progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in therms of science, technology, modernization, living condition, etc. I am going to study the idea of progress through the scientific progress. Do the scientific progress can be considered as a progress for men ? First we'll see the positive aspects and then the negative ones. The scientific progress can be seen as negative because nowadays it is a very controversial topic. We have seen in class a document which illustrate this part of the problem. Indeed it is an extract from CHS glob Online in 2010. This document deals with PGD which is the acronym for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. It is used by parents who want to make sure that their child will not suffer from severe disease. The problem is that in the future it could be used to select certain physical characteristics; indeed apart from the medical objectives PGD could also serve cosmetic purposes which would transgress moral principals. Besides it can be seen as hazardous and scandalous because people will be used as scientific objects and it goes against diversity. It may open the door to the creation of ideal beings and the part who will have been create naturally will be weak, they would not fit the mould anymore. This article criticizes the fact we could choose our baby's characteristics as if we were playing god with human beings. But scientific progress can make a better world such as eradicate diseases. We have seen in class this kind of aspect with a video. This video deals with a doctor who has created a technique named gene therapy. Thanks to this new technique he saved a little girl named Ashi who suffered from ADA which is the disfonctionement of her immune system besides she had faulty genes, because of that she was constently sick, she never left the house except to go to the hospital. In order to save her the doctor extracted blood from ashi and healthy genes from a donor, then he put it in Ashi's white blood cell in a lab and finally the healthy cells are re-injected in ashi's blood stream. Thanks to that 6 months later Ashi was cured, she was unexpectedly the first one to recover. Thanks to this improvement she can now be like every little girl and enjoy her life. We saw also an extract from USA today. This extract deals with parents who used also PGD. They used it in order to save their daughter who’s ill. She has been cured thanks to a bone marrow transplant from her brother which can be seen as a medicine baby whose purpose was to save his sister. This story shows that this scientific breakthrough can improve life expectancy and have outstanding results when it comes to healing severe diseases even if it can show an ethical issues To conclude we can say that scientific progress can help eradicate certain diseases raise ethical questions of where to draw the line in the use of these methods, when does genetic selection become superficial rather than vital and how far should people be allowed to go in order to save lives. To my mind I think that genetic selection should be used just in order to save lives and not in cosmetic purpose.
