Before the American Civil War, slavery was legal but when the North won the Civil War, slavery was abolished. However in the 19th century, laws were introduced. These laws made segregation legal and black people didn’t have the same rights as white people. In the 20th century many people fought for equal rights. During this time the first African American girl went to an all-white school. In 1964 the first Civil Rights Act was passed. In the 21st century Barack Obama became the first black president of the United States.
