Oral expression : Myths and Heroes

Introduction :
The notion I’m going to deal with is Myths and Heroes. The subjet of my oral presentation will be « the myth of witches in America ». A heroe is someone who, with boldness and courage, faces a difficult task, performs an unusual act that brings him admiration. A myth is a person, a thing, an event that is glorified has a legendary character. On the one hand, we will see witches and witch hunting in 17th century America then on the other hand, witches and witch hunting in 20th century America and finally scapegoating
I/ Witches and witch hunting in 17th century America
A/ Witches in 17th century America
witches are represented as old people. First by their physical description, they are old and wrinkled, they have a crooked nose, warts. Too by their clothes, they wear a pointed black hat ans a black cloak. To sum up the main ideas, witches are scary.
Besides, In salem, Massachisetts, mass hysteria was provoked by a group of girls who fell ill and claimed they had been bewitched and were tormented by some poeple in their community
B/ Witch-hunting in 17th century America
To begin, witches were hunted down by Puritans in 17th century. What’s the puritanism ? The puritan’s values and morals are very strict codes. Indeed, there were many prohibition. For example : pleasures, it was forbidden to wear colours, adultery is not tolerated. However if someone didn’t respect the codes, he was put to death or imprisoned or tried. Besides, the dunking stool was often used to prove whether an accused woman was a witch. Indeed, it was used too to punish offenders or suspected witches by plunging them into water. Finally, witch trials took place in Salem, Massuchisetts, in 1692. 200 people were accused of witchcraft and 20 people were hanged.
C/ How can this hunting be explained
Finally, in the document « The witches of Salem » we can see the causes and consequences of the Salem witch trials. A group of girls from Salem became sick : convulsion, horrible vision. Doctors were unable to explain the phenomenen, they said that the girls were under the influence of the devil. More oh hundred people sent to jail and executed.
Secondly, those who were said to be under the influence of the devil were hunted down and arrested, often without hunting was justified to protect the community from the devil.
II/ Witches and witch hunting in 20th century America
A/ Notions of « witch » and « witch hunting » in America in the 1950s
It’s an intensive, systematic campaign directed against those who have done something wrong or who hold different views. Moreover there are blacklisted personalities as Charlie Chaplin (actor), Arthur Miller (playwright), Orson Welles (actor, writer and director) because they accused of to be Communist Sympathies. Would be Communists who were hunted down by the US government had to cooperate if they wanted to be cleared or keep their job. To do so they had to give the names of the Communists that they knew.
B/ From Salem to McCarthyism
McCarthyism refers to the witch hunt that took place in the 1950s in the USA during the period known as the Cold War. To illustrated that, Arthur Miller decided to set his play « The crucible » in the 17th century. He saw an analogy between the two eras in the fight against enemies of the United States. More both the Salem witch hunt and the « Red scare » were triggered by fear. And to finish he had to find a way to denounce what was happening in the United States at that time (a community in witch people were turning against one other due to false accusations and fear of Communism ; a community in witch intolerance and hysteria ruined the lives of many people).
III/ Scapegoating
Other periods in the history of the USA when scapegoats were hunted down. For example, in the late 1920s, Nicola Sacco and Bart Vanzetti were sentenced to death on what looked like false charges. Sacco and Vanzetti were actually anarchists and many thought that they were scapegoats of a government tracking down anarchist activists
Conclusion
To sum up, in the document « The Empire of Bones » recall the necessity for the american society to find scapegoats at some times of its history. These witch hunt brought the mass hysteria about in american society for centuries. Personaly, I think if witches really exist, we shouldn’t be affraid of her because they can to help us. For example in the serie « charmed » the sisters Halliwell save the world from demonic forces.
