( Lettre de Thomas
Dear my dearest Mummy,
I hate it here. I was put with a horrible family. I slept in the basement and a rat is down there and I have tried to get out a thousanad times but they just tell me to go back down there. One of the children punched me in the stomach and I as badly hurt. School is really horrible because the children bully me wherever I am. My teacher is really nice to me, he has never given me the came. The village that I'm in was bombed last night, about ten people were killed, but luckily the house that I'm in wasn't bombed. I'm glad Dad sent me a pestcard from the battle front, I'm glad he is all right. My journey was horrible. I was squashed in and I couldn't go to the toilets so I wet myself. I hope you can finish the jumper soon so that I can wear a nice nice jumper because all my clothes were ruined during the journey. The food is horrible, they give me cold meat with nothing else
Love from Thomas. )

Dear mum,
I was so sad to see you stay. The journey was awful. Alice wet herself and she was sick all over me. But we saw a cow in a field, it was fascinating. We were taken to a village hall and we were picked by Mr and Mrs Kinsman, they're very nice. The house is very big and there is a big garden. The school is very nice. It has a big playground and the teacher, Mr Clark is very strict. I hope you are well and that Daddy is safe. We'll write back as soon as possible.
Edna. )
