Au début elles devaient faire 80 étages, mais il n’y aurait pas eu assez de place pour tout le bureau. Ils l’ont allongé de 30 étages et ils ont ajouté 6 étages de sous-sol.
Les travaux ont commencé le 21 mars 1966. La construction à durée 7 ans, il a fallu 200000 tonnes d’acier. 10000 personnes ont travaillé sur le chantier, 60 personnes y ont perdu la vie. Les Tours Jumelles font 416 mètres de hauteur. Elles ont chacune 99 ascenseurs. Il se trouve des bureaux pour des entreprises et de très grands restaurants. La construction à coûté au total 900 millions de dollars. Les Tours Jumelles ainsi que le World Trade Center à été inauguré le 4 avril 1973. Elles sont les tours les plus hautes jamais construites au Etats-Unis.
Le 11 septembre 2001, un premier avion s’est écrasé sur une des deux tours et 18 minutes plus tard un deuxième avion s’est écrasé sur la deuxième tour. Les avions étaient pilotés par des pirates. 2750 personnes sont mortes et des milliers de personnes ont été blessées.
