Voici les questions:
1. What kind of document is this? Introduce it.
2. What do you learn about the character, describe him precisely?

5. What assumptions (suppositions, hypotheses) do people in Orwell’s 1984 have to make before saying or doing anything?
6. Say whether these statements are true or wrong.
• Usually there was electricity in the evenings.
• The thought police spent their time watching people from helicopters.

1. This document is an extract from George Orwell's Ninety Eighty-Four, published in 1949. The extract shown is the beginning of the novel, therefore introducing the setting of this novel and the main character; Winston Smith.
2.In this extract, we understand that the cgaracter described here is called Winston Smith, he is 39 years old, has facial hair, maybe a wrinkly face knowing he is im his late thirties. He has a quite sanguine face, fair hair and rough skin. He has a varicose ulcer on his right ankle hence the struggle he faces to go up the stairs. He wears the Party's uniform, the blue overalls.

3. In this extract, we can infer that Oceania is a very dull and gloomy place. First of all, the hallway in the Victory Mansions smelt of old food snd rag mats. Second of all, its a cold day in April, there is a feeling of uncomfortableness as the weather isnt pleasant.

3. (suite). To add to that, the fact that "the clocks strike thirteen" shows the reader that living in Oceania is grim and hostile as clocks do not normally strike 13, this gives us a feeling that Oceania is an unatural place.

4. We can say that Winstons life is extremely controlled and miserable. There is constant surveillance (telescreens) and propaganda posters everywhere ("Big brother is watching you"). Winston is constantly seen and heard, in the world of 1984, privacy doesnt exist. Winston lives his life in a miserable place, with Thought Police and Telescreens watching over him 24/7

5. Knowing that the Party is constantly seen and heard at any time, the people always have to think before saying anything or doing anything. If they say things theyre not meant to say, they will face consequences and punishment.

5(suite), the people have to immediately assume that the Thought Police is watching and hearing them at any time.
