Elizabeth Gladys Dean was the last survivor of the Titanic sinking.
Mr Alfred Fernand OMONT was born on September 25, 1882 in Elbeuf-sur-Seine (Seine-Maritime). Because of his rebellious nature, his father sent him to England for an internship. In 1900, he moved to London where he taught French. Back in Le Havre, he became a cotton dealer. This activity requires him to travel regularly to the United States. On April 10, 1912, Fernand OMONT, aged 29, boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg as a first-class passenger. He could not board earlier as originally planned because of the coal strike in England. He had a single cabin. He became acquainted with two compatriots, Paul CHEVRÉ, a Belgian sculptor, and Pierre MARÉCHAL, a French aviator.
On the evening of April 14, Fernand OMONT was playing cards (bridge) with them in the Café Parisien when the collision occurred.
“We played until around 11:40 p.m., then there was a shock. From experience the shock was not significant, so I thought it was caused by a wave.” “When we were in the water, we started paddling away from the ship. There were about 22 women on board. My friend, Marshal, was on board, and I did not recognize him until the morning. We were 150 meters from the ship. We saw it sinking slowly”
Alfred Omont died on 18 March 1948, aged 65.
