I'm going to talk about « Places and forms of power ». First i would like to give a definition of power. Power is the ability or capacity to do something or act in particular way”, or an “Authority that is given or delegated to a person or body”.

The images are everywhere on the internet, press (news papers, magazines,books, an TV , advertising...

To what extent do images influence our everyday lives ?

At first, i'm going to talk about power of images in advertising, secondly in the press, and finally power of political images.

I-Power of images in advertising


Nowadays advertising is everywhere, in TV as much as in newspapers or in the streets. Advertising has permeated our lives through films, the web, and even schools or, clothes. It happened thanks to new technologies and progress in the means of communication.


Firstly, I will focus an article named “power of advertising” from online paper “ The New Significance” by Justin Lewis in 2001. The advertising is cause of several problems. It's that explain the document: the power of advertising. First it is an empty promise because studies have proved happiness is not related to buying.Thus, it is a lie. Then, the second problem is environmental. This way of living is clearly unsustainable. The last is an economic problem, as it triggers unemployment. Having free time is better than having money to spend, people are caught in a system where they need to buy even if they don't have the money for it. Consequently they ask for loans and credits and become indebted. Society thus becomes unhealthy, economically speaking.


The message of advertising is that people need to buy, and the buying is a way tp happiness. Happiness can only be reached through consumption.

The author is criticizing the fact there is too much advertising in our society. It eggs people on consuming, and delivers a false message that makes individuals unhappy. He is in favor of limiting the volume of commercials and advertisements, and deplores that the government is not doing anything. He argues that the power of advertising has t be curbed, and with it the power of images in advertising.

The ton to author is a ton serious, worried, angry.


Images in advertising are very powerful, and sometimes they replace words. A lot of strategies are used to convince the consumer to buy. They can use colors, playing on emotions, humor, shock or the creation of an ideal, to attract our attention.

So images in advertising influence our lives, and dictate our consuming.




II-Power of images in the press → 4th press


Nowadays the press is considering like 4th power, the images are everywhere newspapers, on the web, magazines and in tabloids.


The second document is a testimony entitled '' Citizen Journalism '' a woman talking about new form of power given to ordinary people, his phenomen is citizen journalism, it seems today everybody is becoming a citizen journalist, through Facebook and Twitter and blogs. If you have access to a computer, an iPhone, a camera you can be a journalist too. She presents many advantages to this. It puts a lot of pressure on people in powerful positions as police officers, politicians, and give us, people, power too to counteract him. Moreover, this phenomenon

presents some drawbacks too, that include the lack of privacy. No matter where you go, what you do, there's somebody with an iPhone, with Facebook, and Twitter, all our lives are becoming public an way. we need be careful.


The testimony proves new power of citizen journalism. A woman explain this new concept, a new from of power who becomes a kind of weapon to protect himself against injustices but with new technologies everybody can have power with the ease to capture images and to spread them.


Images have a lot of influence and power, because they can destroy lives or careers. They have become a form of counter-power accessible to everyone. Thus, images are a very powerful weapon.



III-Power of political images


Political images are often use during the elections by politicians, in the form of propaganda, portraits, caricatures and cartoons.


The last document is a cartoon from the International New York Times by Pat Chapate in 2018.

We can see two man, one it's president Trump is sitting in his oval desk, he seems moody next to a general, he looks scared because the president he must be take decision that result war. In the background, we can see a windows and the american flag in the corner and in the front the president, two big bottom, the same yellow and red bottom, one message is tweet and other nuke.

The intention of a cartoonist that people have to be careful, because Trump he is like child, it's dangerous and dumb man.

The ton is satirical because the president isn't reliable, isn't trustworthy.
