Five days ago, I was hunting with my uncle in the forest near my village when suddenly three other men kidnapped us. They tied our hands with a rope and brought us until the beach where they climbed us in a huge ship. I was crying, I knew I won’t see again my sweet family. These horrible men enchained us with many others in the ship’s hold. Some were praying, some were sick. It was stinking. Per day I only ate one time, I was hungry. Three months later, I arrived in a new land full of white people. The way they were dressed was so different than us. One man gave us oil for our skin to look well before being sold like a beast.
Me and my uncle were separated, since then, I’ve never seen him. The Barnett’s family was now my owner. I belonged to them. They have a huge cotton plantation and their house was big too. Mr Helly, the forman
was very hard with the slaves. He was beating us with a whip. Each morning I got up early. I picked up cotton on the fields until the sunset. The night, I was crying thinking of my mum, my dad my little brother I have lost. Some night, for fun the master forced us to dance.
One day, Tom another slave tried to escape. He was captured and he was hanged. The master was so crual. Sometimes, in my dream, I see again my father telling me: “Amadu, you become a man, and God created us free!” These words give me hope when I want to give up.
I’m surviving for my family. I dream one day I could come back home crying “I’m back ! Mum! Dad! I’m back!! Time past and my life is still the same always so hard.
Yesterday, Mr Helly gave me ten crack of whip; my back is hurting so much. Why do they treat us worst than animals?
Some blacks heard that in the north blacks are free men. Finally, a glimmer of hope(une lueur d'espoir)
