It has had city status since 1853 and in 2008 there were about 500 000 inhabitants in Manchester. It is considered the second city of England thank's to it's sports, strong economie and culture although its size and population do not allow dethrone Birmingham. Its inhabitants are called the Red Devils. The city is at the heart of Greater Manchester, which has over two million and a half inhabitants. The main cities in Greater Manchester are: Bury, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Stockport, Salford, Altrincham, Wigan. Manchester is located 260 km to the north-west of London, on the east bank of the River Irwell. The city is bordered to the south by the Cheshire Plain and the north and east by the Pennine mountain chain. Historically, most of the city was part of Lancashire, but areas south of the River Mersey in Cheshire belong. The vicus created by the Romans near Fort Mamucium, built in 79 on a rocky hill near the confluence of the Irwell and Medlock, has become over its history a major city in northern England. Manchester is the first city in the world to have been industrialized, and has played an important role during the Industrial Revolution. During the nineteenth century, the city acquired the nickname "Cottonopolis" because of its important cotton industry. The economy of the city has since turned towards the tertiary sector, and it is now a major financial center. The history of Manchester has seen this city of a small Roman fort in one of the largest industrial cities in the UK and even the world. Manchester City begin to grow at an astonishing rate in the nineteenth century, thanks to the strong development of the textile industry during the Industrial Revolution. Manchester City saw the birth of the first railway station to carry passengers, as well as other scientific achievements. But in the middle of the twentieth century the industrial economy of the city began to decline, causing serious social problems. In 1996, the center is subject to an attack claimed by the IRA, the most important on the ground in Britain, which is 200 injured but no deaths. The city still remains today a major post-industrial city in the UK, as a result of various investments. In the 1st century Manchester was occupied by the Romans, who made a camp (it was then known as Mancunium or Mamucium, hence the name for a Manchester resident "Mancunian"). In the fourteenth century it hosted a community of Flemish weavers who produced woolen and linen. She then developed through these activities. Its damp climate was in with the surroundings ideal for cotton mills, such as Quarry Bank Mill. Thus grew the cotton industry in the late eighteenth century. The rise of mechanization made it a major European industrial cities. Friedrich Engels was a notable visitor in the early years 1840. Sent by his father watch one of its plants, he was shocked by the living conditions in the city and wrote a report in 1844 entitled conditions of the working class in England. working city, it was also an important center of political protest throughout the nineteenth century. Manchester was a key player in the industrial revolution. Its growth was also helped by the proximity to the port of Liverpool. Very important works allowed to open in 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal, canal linking the city to the ocean. This made Manchester, 40km from the coast, a major British ports. After the war, traditional industries declined. The economy is then concentrated on the tertiary sector. On Saturday, June 15, 1996, the IRA exploded a bomb of 1,500 kg of explosives in a van on Corporation Street. It was the heaviest ever used on English soil. However the authorities were alerted before the explosion, which helped limit casualties. 50,000 m² retail and 25,000 m² of offices were blown in the blast.
