au prétérit ou au past perfect. Il y a parfois
plusieurs possibilités.
a. Before the Gold Rush (to start)....., San
Francisco (to be)..... a quiet place.
b. When they (to arrive) ....., we (already / to
start) ..... cooking.
c. They (already / to visit)..... foreign countries,
but until then, they (always / to come back)
home.
d. The Joads (to be) very tired because they
(not / to sleep)..... well.
e. The pioneers (to cross) ..... the desert before
they (to arrive)..... in the promised land.​
