Working Children :

At the beginning of the Victorian times, children that were from a poor family needed to work vert hard top earn enough money to live and to help their families. They started working when they were very young and when they could walk. Thèse children risked their lives doing dangerous jobs, where they could die and have injuries. The lucky children got apprenticed in a trade and the less lucky ones worked in farms, or industries and factories when they appeared. Children usualy did the jobs that the adults could not do, like chimney sweeping where they would have been sent scrambling up inside the chimney to scrape and brush soot away. When they came down they were covered in soot, and they had bleeding elbows and knees. In 1833 the Factory Act was made law. It was now illegal for children under 9 to be employed in textile factories.

Les enfants chanceux ont étaient mis en apprentissage dans un métier et les moins chanceux ont travailler dans des fermes, ou des industries et des usines lorsqu'ils ont apparus. Les enfants faisaient généralement les travails que les adultes ne pouvaient pas faire, comme le ramonage de la cheminée où ils auraient étaient envoyés à l'intérieur de la cheminée pour gratter et brosser la suie. Quand ils étaient descendus ils étaient couvert de suie, et ils saignaient des coudes et des genoux. En 1833, le Factory Act est promulgué. Il est désormais illégal d'employer des enfants de moins de 9 ans dans des usines textiles.
