This notion deals with the ability to control others and to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance, or opposition. This of course leads to conflict between those who have and exercise power and those who have none or little of it. I have chosen to focus my presentation on the racism in America. My question is: How racism has evolved in America since the slavery? In a first time I talk about the evolution of racism from slavery to segregation, at the second time I talk about the racism today I/ First let’s talk about slavery first; it’s the power that white people exercised over black people in Africa. Slaves are people who don’t have any rights, who work for white man without paying, they have no freedom. Most of the slaves were in the south of America and worked in the fields. During the periods of slavery, the black community were enslaved and deprived of all their rights as human beings, because the Americans were deeply racist and prejudiced against black people. Slavery was abolished by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 in the middle of the civil war. At the end of this war, the slaves from the south joined to the north to defend their rights. The abolition of slavery gives way to segregation; the black people don’t have the same rights as white peoples. They don’t share the same restaurant, the same public toilet, the same entrances… One of the most important and most famous stories about segregation for me is that of Rosa Park, she was an African American rights activist civilian. She is famous because she refused to yield her seat to a white man in a bus in 1955, because she was exhausted by the treatment that she and black people received each day of their lives. She was arrested and found guilty of breaking the law. In an article in time Online, Harry Belafonte tells that black people fought for their country as Us citizens, but they are not considered as such. The success of Gandhi (independence of India) has inspired the black community to start asking equal rights. The Medias helped a lot, because it was a way to show the world what they were going through. MLK, American black pastor, hopes that someday all blacks and whites will be equal. Therefore, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in 1963, he delivered his famous speech « I have a dream » in front of more than 200 000 people claiming respect for the civil rights of black people. II/ We will now talk about has become of racism today. Even if it’s less present it’s still relevant. For example, the story of Trayvon Martin. In February 2012, a 17 years old unarmed black teenager (Trayvon Martin) was killed by a man (George Zimmerman). He was acquitted because he said it was self-defence. This story was important because at first the police didn’t want to investigate, but a nationwide protest put pressure on the government and finally Georges Zimmerman was arrested and prosecuted. It showed, once again, the injustice against coloured people. This story has made a name for itself, especially that of three black women who after this story created a hash tag “black lives matter” to protest against immigration racism and injustice. To conclude we can say that black people are free in America where former President Barack Obama was black. Several events in the recognition of African-Americans have increased although today the recognition is not complete unfortunately

Je n arrive pas à trouver une amorce pour mon introduction et j ai penser à un plan qui serait : I) la conscience permet d’ accéder au bonheur... II) mais pas dans toute les circonstances Mais je ne sais pas trop quoi mettre à l intérieur Pouvez vous m aidez merci beaucoup
