Introduction
Today, we are going to introduce you the WOOFing ! If you want to live and learn on organic farms worldwide and to share your life with other like-minded people, the WOOF is for you ! At first we are going to define what is “organic farms” and after that we are going to explain what is “WOOFing”.
I- “Organic” farms
Defining “Organic” farms Organic farming is a method of crop and livestock production that involves much more than choosing not to use pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics and growth hormones. Organic production is a holistic system designed to optimize the productivity and fitness of diverse communities within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. The principal goal of organic production is to develop enterprises that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment. The general principles of organic production include the following: • protect the environment, minimize soil degradation and erosion, decrease pollution, optimize biological productivity and promote a sound state of health • maintain long-term soil fertility by optimizing conditions for biological activity within the soil • maintain biological diversity within the system • recycle materials and resources to the greatest extent possible within the enterprise • provide attentive care that promotes the health and meets the behavioural needs of livestock • prepare organic products, emphasizing careful processing, and handling methods in order to maintain the organic integrity and vital qualities of the products at all stages of production • rely on renewable resources in locally organized agricultural systems Why Buy Organic? Consumers purchase organic foods for many different reasons. Many want to buy food products that are free of chemical pesticides or grown without conventional fertilizers. Some simply like to try new and different products
Prices Organic produce can usually qualify for higher prices than non-organic products. Prices and premiums are negotiated between buyer and seller and will fluctuate with local and global supply and demand. Higher prices offset the higher production costs (per unit of production) of management, labour, and for lower farm yields. Currently, demand is greater than supply for most organic products.
Summary Organic farming can be a viable alternative production method for farmers, but there are many challenges. One key to success is being open to alternative organic approaches to solving production problems. Determine the cause of the problem, and assess strategies to avoid or reduce the long term problem rather than a short term fix for it. And that's why WOOFer are volunteers !
II- What’s WOOF ?
WWOOF is a worldwide movement linking volunteers with organic farmers and growers to promote cultural and educational experiences based on trust and non-monetary exchange, thereby helping to build a sustainable, global community. As a volunteer (or WWOOFer as we call them) you will live alongside your host helping with daily tasks and experiencing life as a farmer. As a host farm you will open your home to receive visitors from your own country or abroad who want to connect with the land and support the organic movement.
The volunteer works on average 5 hours a day on the farm and in exchange the host lodges and feeds him… For the volunteer it allows to learn how to live and work on an organic farm while having the time to discover the farm's surroundings. And for the host it allows to have help on the farm and to meet people…
